Simon and Christine have enjoyed being writers their entire lives. Simon was a sports writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a senior writer and web editor for Samaritan’s Purse, a major international disaster relief organization, a writer and editor of Wrightsville Beach Magazine, a monthly leisure magazine, and now writes for N.C. State University Extension.
Christine is a published travel writer. Each time we took a ski vacation, she would write a report for the Star-Telegram, where she worked as managing editor for one of the nation’s pioneering internet services. Memorable first stories were of Breckenridge and Copper Mountain and loving the family friendly Sierra Ski Ranch (now Sierra at Tahoe) and Heavenly in northern California.
Christine is also a published free-lance feature writer. She delights in finding out and telling others why and how something works. A mobility expert told her some methods blind people use to keep their dollars organized. A one is flat, a five bent in half, a 10 folded long and thin, etc. Many readers responded, “I never thought of that.”
Travel has been the path of Simon’s life. Born in England, he lived in Singapore and Ascension Island where his father was stationed with the Royal Navy. He spent later childhood and early adult years in Texas, where we met at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Sports writing took him all over the U.S. and Canada. Assignments with his disaster relief job included travels to Russia, South Africa, China, Moldova, Iraq, Afghanistan, Argentina, Honduras and more. Now he travels the 100 counties of North Carolina reporting on various Extension programs.
In November 2018, we both quit our jobs in the Wilmington, N.C. area, rented out our house, said farewell to dogs and children and took off to travel Europe for a year. We cut it short, missing our dogs and grown kids, but before ending the “travels”, we had visited 20 countries. There is much to share about our time adrift. Now that one of us is retired, we hope to get back to sharing our adventures.
Happy trails to you.
